Pop! Crunch! Jangle! What's this...sounds from the Batman television series?! No, these are some of the sounds of the DI$COUNT RACK ALL-STARS (DRAS). The band plays original pop-rock music at their shows along with a few original blues songs and also a cover or 2.
DRAS was formed in the spring of 2004. Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist Julio Cuomo and his guitarist and cousin Nick Coppola were in a band called the Word on Street. The band's days were winding down since drummer & vocalist Jeff Wayne was starting a family. At the time, Julio was finishing up recording his CD titled Slipping In & Out of Other's Circles and he wanted to start another band with Coppola on lead guitar. The first order of business was to find a bassist.
Julio places an ad on www.Chicago-Musician.com and it gets answered by bassist Steve Dove. After auditioning Steve, they knew he was their man. Now they had to complete the rhythm section and get a drummer.
Julio called Mike Martin, who pounded the skins for the pop-punk band PGS, a band that played a few gigs with The Word on the Street. Fortunately, Mike was not in a band at the time and after one practice / audition, Mike joins the band.
The line-up of the band was completed after keyboardist Ernesto Gasulla answers another ad placed on www.Chicago-Musician.com.
The band starting playing shows in the fall of 2004 and have shared the stage with Middle 8, Cats on Smack, Loomis, and Barely Standing, to name a few.
In June of 2005, Nick leaves the band because of hearing problems. Julio asks his new friends from Middle 8 if they know any guitarists. Tom O'Brien, the lead guitarist from Middle 8, comes to rescue and refers his friend Tim Walsh who joins the band. Tim is also the lead guitarist in the country-rock band the Moon Dawgs.
Things stalled a little bit for the band in 2006. In January, Tim leaves band and in March Ernesto also retires. Julio, Mike, and Steve continue to practice and they do audition a few lead guitarists but nothing panned out. Fortunately for the guys, their friend & former lead guitarist Tim Walsh is there to the help the boys and he refers his friend Tom Lynch to the band in September of 2006. Before the audtion was over, the 3 guys knew they found their man and Tom Lynch is newest DRAS member on lead guitar and vocals.
The band played some exciting shows now that they were re-energized by their new guitar guitarist. In addition to slingin a mean ax, Tom also sings a great high harmony. This finally started looking up, but not for long.
In April of 2008 Steve Dove announces that he is leaving the band. Right now Julio, Mike, and Tom are looking for bassist. If you know somebody, please have them call Julio at 708.278.1501.
As for the songs, songwriter Julio cites pop-rockers Ralph Covert & The Bad Examples, The Barenaked Ladies, and Fountains of Wayne, along with alt-country artist Robbie Fulks, as his main influences.
As for Nick Coppola, Julio still plays with Nick in their un-named acoustic duo.
