If you are looking to hear some of the songs that Julio Cuomo has written, please go to www.myspace.com/JulioCuomo. In 2004, Cuomo released Slipping in and Out of Other's Circles, a CD that contained a dozen Cuomo-penned songs. Shortly after the CD was released, Cuomo formed the Discount Rack All-Starsan original pop-rock outfit. The original line-up was Julio on guitar and vocals, Nick Coppola on lead guitar, Steve Dove on bass, Mike Martin on drums and Ernesto Gasulla on keyboards.
The band was together for four years. They have opened up or co-headlined shows with Middle 8, Amanda Sena, Barely Standing, Andy Tianis, Paul McKinney, Cats on Smack, The Jeff Burrows Project and others.
The line-up changed several times but Cuomo, Dove, and Martin were there for all line-ups. After Coppola left because of hearing problems, he was replaced by Moon Dawgs guitarist Tim Walsh. Later on, Tim left and Tom Lynch took over the lead guitar duties.
The Slipping CD received some positive press. In addition, Chicago-based musician Mighty Joe really enjoyed Cuomo's song, "A Nice Groupie Girl" so much that he decided to record his own version. "Groupie" is not only on Mighty Joe's Balance CD, but it is also a staple at his live concerts. "It's a lot of fun to walk into a club and see Mighty Joe perform and to see people singing along to a song that I wrote," says Cuomo.
In addition to live shows, the Mighty Joe version of "Groupie" has been played on WOOP-FM in Cleveland, TN.
As far as new marterial is concerned, Cuomo is currently working on a new CD. "Mike Martin (drummer) and I went into the studio last summer and laid down the tracks for six songs. Since then, I have been occasionally laying down the guitar and bass parts. I have another dozen or so songs that I can record, but I'll probably just pick another six or so and start recording those songs."
For now, Cuomo is playing in a duo with guitarist / bassist Nick Coppola. Once the CD is finished, he hopes to have a full band together that will go out and play some shows and promote the new CD.
